搖滾、龐克、重金屬、迪斯可、饒舌、嘻哈、迷幻浩室、青少年叛逆文化、流行音樂、唱片工業，近年的音樂社會學與文化研究已就這些標題產出了相當可觀的文獻。本文將不在這些標題的層次談論音樂，而打算以同為感官聽覺的兩面界分：音樂/語言、音樂/噪音，作為評論的軸線。第I節討論音樂與語言之間的界分與關係，第II節速描「高雅文化模式」音樂肅靜噪音的過程，第III節略評流行樂類噪音的挑釁與被收編，第IV節評論John Cage的噪音實驗音樂。
