Library of Congress
The Library of Congress’s most monumental and ornate structure is the Thomas Jefferson Building, named for Thomas Jefferson, the third president of the United States. The building was constructed beginning in 1886 specifically to serve as the American national library. It opened its doors to the public in 1897. Designed in an Italian Renaissance style, it is one of the most elaborately decorated buildings in the United States.
