Camille (1830–1903), French painter and graphic artist. Born in the West Indies, he moved to France in the 1850s and studied in Paris with Monet. At first influenced by Corot, he later began to paint out of doors and to develop a spontaneous style typical of other impressionist painters; he participated in all eight of the impressionist exhibitions. He also experimented with pointillism in the 1880s as well as encouraging Cézanne and Gauguin in their attempts to depart from an impressionist style of painting.
